Abstract
589,001. Stabilizing blasting explosives. WHITWORTH, E., HORNEL, J. C., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 14, 1945, No. 6365. [Class 9 (ii)] Blasting explosive compositions, of the kind liable on prolonged heating to evolve oxides of nitrogen such as compositions comprising nitric esters, ammonium nitrate or metallic nitrates, are stabilized by including in admixture small amounts of one or more alkali metal dihydrogen ortho-phosphates and one or move di-alkali hydrogen-ortho-phosphates in such relative proportions as to give neutral mixtures of these salts. An equimolecular mixture of sodium dihydrogen ortho-phosphate monohydrate and disodium hydrogen ortho-phosphate dodecahydrate may be employed in amounts from 0.25 to 2.5 per cent by weight of the explosive composition, or the equivalent percentages of the corresponding potassium salts, in the anhydrous form, may be used. Examples of stabilized gelatine explosives of specified compositions are given. Specification 383,630 is referred to.
