Abstract

743,710. Safety ammonium nitrate explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct 7, 1953 [Nov. 19, 1952], No. 29198/52. Class 9(2) In a safety ammonium nitrate explosive comprising trinitrotoluene and sodium chloride wherein NH 4 NO 3 and T.N.T. consist of fine particles in intimate admixture, characterized in that the amount of sodium chloride is at least 35 per cent by weight of the explosive and at least 10 per cent by weight of the explosive of the NaCl is retainable on a 120 B.S.S. sieve. Proportions may be 30-60 per cent NaCl, 5-12 per cent T.N.T. and 65-28 per cent mainly of NH 4 NO 3 . Sodium nitrate and other non-explosive solid, e.g. fibre, may also be included to give a satisfactory oxygen balance, which is between -0.5 and +3 grms./100 grms. The NaCl should be such that not more than 25 per cent will pass a 120 B.S.S. sieve, and should all pass 16 B.S.S. sieve. Reference is made to the explosive having a detonation velocity of 2300-2900 m./sec. and to 17.5 per cent NaCl being retainable on 120 B.S.S. sieve when the explosive contains 40 per cent NaCl. The T.N.T. and NH 4 NO 3 may be ground together and NaCl wholly or partly retainable on 120 B.S.S. mixed in, or some NaCl may be milled with the T.N.T. and NH 4 NO 3 and the portion of NaCl too coarse to pass 120 B.S.S. sieve added later. Alternatively, the T.N.T. and NH 4 NO 3 may be milled with or without some NaCl, NaCl all retained on 120 B.S.S. sieve, preferably on 60 B.S.S. sieve, is added, and milling continued for a short time, so that some NaCl is still too coarse to pass 120 B.S.S. sieve. In an example the NH 4 NO 3 is surface coated with the ammonium salt of trisulphonated pararosaniline.
