Abstract
686,789. Safety explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 4, 1951 [May 5, 1950], No. 11150/50. Class 9(ii) A safety explosive having a bulk density of 0.90-1.05 grams/c.c. at 25 lbs./sq. in. and a calculated oxygen balance between -0.5 and +3 grams oxygen per 100 grams composition consists to the extent of not less than 97 per cent by weight of trinitrotoluene, 11-22 per cent ammonium nitrate, 22-36 per cent sodium nitrate, 12-27 per cent and sodium chloride 29-35 per cent. The composition may also contain up to 3 per cent of comminuted dried vegetable tissue, e.g. low density balsa woodmeal, or ground cork, and dyestuffs of aromatic character containing a plurality of sulphonic acid groups in the form of their soluble salts, e.g. Acid Magenta and salts of trisulphonated New Magenta as antisetting agents. The ingredients are mixed by dry milling with attrition, moistened to 1 per cent moisture content, dried at a temperature exceeding 32.2C and screened.
