Abstract

In a free-flowing microprilled ammonium nitrate composition especially suitable for use in a fertilizer or explosive at least 80% of the prills are less than 20 mesh, the prills containing not more than 5% of a hydratable inorganic salt and water in amount less than that required for complete hydration of the salt, there being less than 6% of the explosively inert materials present. The compositions may have bulk densities of at least 62 lb./cu. ft. to in excess of 100 lb./cu. ft., whilst various preferred ranges of size and weight ratios are specified in detail. The hydratable inorganic substance may be Mg, Al, Fe3+, Fe2+, Ca and Zn nitrates, also MgSO4, MgO, MgCO3 or mixtures thereof, the latter two compounds being changed to nitrates when added to molten ammonium nitrate. Additives such as talc, diatomaceous earth and surface active agents may also be added to the composition. The compositions may be made by prilling a molten mixture containing all the ingredients, e.g. by spraying through nozzles and the solid product may be optionally sieved to give the desired size ranges. For use in explosive compositions the ammonium nitrate prills may be mixed with carbon black, sawdust or oat hulls but preferably a hydrocarbon oil, e.g. 6% light fuel oil. The explosive composition may be used in both wet or dry boreholes and the size of the prills is varied according to the size of the borehole.
