Abstract

A fertilizer composition containing ammonium nitrate is rendered free-flowing and non-caking by coating the granules with less than 3% by weight on the average, taken over 1000 tons of fertilizer, of a composition comprising china clay having incorporated therein up to 3.5%, preferably not more than 2% of its weight of an aliphatic amine having from 14-25 C atoms in the molecule. The preferred clays are Chyno No. 3 or Gyd-dis clay and the preferred amine is octadecylamine. The preferred fertilizers contain 10 to 90% by weight of ammonium nitrate. The coating is accomplished by adding up to 3% by weight, preferably more than 1% by weight of the clay containing the specified amount of the desired amine to the granules of the fertilizer composition and mixing well, e.g. for 5-15 minutes in an edge runner mill to obtain the coated granules. The fertilizer granules may be first coated with lubricating or fuel oil before being coated with the amine-clay composition.
