Abstract
Ammonium nitrate of reduced tendency to caking and setting on storage and of substantially normal white appearance consists of discrete ammonium nitrate particles carrying on their surfaces a deposit comprising a normal aliphatic primary amine having at least 12 carbon atoms or a salt thereof, amounting to not less than 0.005 per cent, preferably about 0.05 per cent, calculated as amine. The amine may be n-octadecylamine, n-hexadecylamine, n-pentadecylamine, n-tetradecylamine, or n-do-decylamine, and the salt of such amine may be hydrochloride, nitrate, sulphate, acetate or carbonate. The ammonium nitrate particles may be sprayed with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the amine, or a finely-divided amine or salt may be mixed with the ammonium nitrate in the form of a hot, or cold, dry solid, a hot melt, or a hot aqueous solution.
