Abstract
595,443. Explosives. WHITWORTH, E., HORNEL, J. C., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 9, 1945, No. 17442. [Class 9 (ii)] A low-density blasting explosive comprising solid salts, a proportion of dried organised vegetable tissue of carbohydrate character which is preferably of low density characteristics, and a liquid self-explosive compound includes in admixture therewith nitrouanidine in the form of thin needle-like crystals obtained by rapid crystallization from solution in hot watert The vegetable tissue material includes wood meals from low density woods, e.g. balsa wood, vegetable stalk and pith materials, e.g. bagasse. partly refined low density peat materials and cork. According to the examples, nitroguanidine, preceded by a nitrated mixture of glycerol and ethylene glycol mixed with peat containing resin and diammonium phosphate, is added to ammonium nitrate and sodium chloride contained in a mixer.
