Abstract

591,755. Blasting-explosives. WHITWORTH, E., HORNEL, J. C., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 16, 1945, No. 12280. [Class 9 (ii)] A low density blasting explosive of the kind including solid salts and a liquid phase constituent comprises a liquid self-explosive compound as sensitizer and the density-reducing ingredients comprise a quantity of fibres of a stabilized nitrocellulose of nitrogen content below 12.3 per cent and not swellable by the said liquid phase constituent. When the latter consists essentially of nitroglycerine, the nitrogen content of the cellulose is between 10.5 and 11.2 per cent. The bulk density of the dry fibres under a packing pressure of 25 lbs. per square inch should not exceed 0.4 grams per c.c. The fibres, which may be kiered, may be obtained by the nitration of cotton linters or wood pulp. The explosives may also include a proportion of dried organised vegetable tissue of carbohydrate character, preferably of low density characteristics, e.g. woodmeals, from low density woods such as balsa wood, vegetable stalk and pith materials such as bagasse, partly refined low density peat materials and cork.
