Abstract
668,972. Ammonium nitrate explosives. ATLAS POWDER CO. March 17, 1950. [July 1, 1949] No. 6708/50. Class 9 (ii). An explosive comprises a solid carbonaceous fuel, a sensitizer, and crystallized granules of ammonium nitrate, e.g. at least 40 per cent of the explosive composition, containing, say 0.02-0.11 equivalents per mol of ammonium nitrate, of potassium sulphate and/or chloride which is distributed in solid solution throughout the granules. Fuels may be wood pulp, bagasse, apricot pip pulp, coal, starch, and cornflour, and sensitizers may be nitroglycerine, tri-nitroof dinitro-toluene and powdered aluminium or magnesium. The potassium salt may be added at any stage of the preparation and graining of the ammonium nitrate and grain modifying salts, such as ammonium chloride or sulphate, may be included. Other constituents are nitrate or chlorate of sodium, sulphur and chalk.
