770,533. Safety blasting explosives. DYNAMIT-AKT.-GES. VORM. A. NOBEL & CO. March 5, 1954 [March 7, 1953], No. 6565/54. Class 9 (2). A substantially fire-damp proof explosive of increased power contains, as a first component, between 7 and 12.5 per cent. of a self-explosive, e.g. nitroglycerin, nitroglycol, diglycol dinitrate, or pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and, as a second component, a mixture of an inorganic nitrate and an organic or inorganic compound, which reacts with the nitrate, or yields on explosion a gas which reacts with the nitrate, to produce an inorganic flame quenching salt, the amount of nitrate being stoichiometrically equivalent to the compound or the gas. Alternatively, the explosive contains, as a first component, 7-12.5 per cent. of a chlorine-containing self-explosive yielding chlorine on explosion, e.g. dinitrochlorohydrin and, as a second component, at least one inorganic nitrate in amount stoichiometrically equivalent to the chlorine. In all cases at least 20 per cent. and not more than 90 per cent. of the nitrate or the mixture of nitrate and compound has or have a grain size below 0.1 mm. All the examples refer to compositions containing a mixture of ammonium chloride and sodium nitrate, which will yield sodium chloride on explosion, a mixture of nitroglycerin and nitroglycol, and argillaceous earth. The Specification also refers to the use of hexachlorocyclohexane in place of ammonium chloride, to the use of potassium or calcium nitrates, or mixtures of these with sodium nitrate, and to the use of a mixture of sodium nitrate with ammonium oxalate or sodium acetate, which yields sodium carbonate on explosion.
