Abstract

582,621. Propellent explosives. HALL, D. H. June 15, 1942, Nos. 8204/42 and 11405/43. [Class 9 (ii)] A liquid or plastic propellent explosive, which can be fed to a combustion chamber at a greater rate than the rate of burning, comprises a relatively non-volatile liquid explosive such as nitroglycerine, and an organic solid or liquid diluent of low volatility miscible therewith. The proportions of the two constituents are preferably such that the calorific value ofthe resulting propellant lies between 700 and 1050 cal. /gm. Examples are given of suitable proportions by weight of the constituents to suit the liquid explosive used. The following examples of constituents are given.-For liquid explosives ethylene glycoldinitrate, diethylene glycoldinitrate, or nitroisobutyl glycerol trinitrate ; for liquid diluents : nitrobenzene, o-nitroanisole, or nitroparaffins; and for solid diluents: diethyl diphenyl urea, diphenylamine or dibutyl phthalate.
