Abstract
412,583. Explosives. WHITE, A. G., 45, Caledonia Road, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Nov. 29, 1932, No. 33805. [Class 9 (ii).] Blasting explosives having a satisfactorily high sensitivity to propagation and capable of giving a high yield of lump coal are made up of 11 to 30 per cent of nitric ester or nitrobody or both, and at least 20 per cent of safety ingredients such as alkali chlorides, borates, or oxalates, or the corresponding ammonium salts, with or without not more than 20 per cent of carbonaceous materials together with sufficient oxidizing ingredients to give a satisfactory oxygen balance, the amount of nitric ester chosen rising with the amount and absorbency of carbonaceous materials, and the proportions of all the ingredients being regulated within the limits specified above so that the volume-power factor, that is the product of the density and ballistic swing of the explosive, lies between 0À6 and 1À8. Several examples are described. One example contains nitrated mixture of glycerine and glycol 15 per cent, ammonium nitrate 8-5 per cent, sodium nitrate 12À0 per cent, plant fibre 6À0 per cent, sodium chloride 58À0 per cent, and ammonium phosphate 0À5 per cent. This has a density of 1À1 gm. per c.c. and gives a ballistic pendulum swing of 1À08 inches, which makes the volume-power factor 1À19.
