A high velocity gelatine explosive comprises not less than 20 per cent. and up to 55 per cent. of a liquid explosive composition which composition is thickened with nitrocellulose, the liquid explosive composition containing at least as its major constituent a liquid explosive nitric ester, 10-50 per cent. of a finely divided water insoluble barium salt of a polybasic inorganic acid, and a proportion of sodium chloride, the quantity of inert constituents present being such that the explosive has a power not higher than 51 per cent. of that of Blasting Gelatine (as measured by the ballistic mortar), is detonatable under hydrostatic pressure by a No. 6 copper detonator, and is incapable of igniting inflammable gas mixtures in accordance with two specified Gallery tests. Barium salts may be the sulphate, milled barytes, precipitated barium chromate, or precipitated barium phosphate, of size to all pass 300 B.S.S., preferably an impalpable powder as used as pigments. The liquid explosive composition may include a liquid aromatic nitro-compound, e.g. orthonitrotoluol. In examples barytes, barium chromate, or barium phosphate is admixed with nitroglycerine, or an 80/20 or 90/10 mixture of nitroglycerine and ethylene glycol dinitrate, nitrocotton, sodium chloride, chalk, and diammonium hydrogen phospate, and alcohol, woodmeal, ammonium nitrate, and orthonitrotoluol are additional optional components. The liquid nitric ester and nitrocotton are gelatinised first, together with alcohol, woodmeal, or orthonitrotoluol if added, the remaining components are added one by one to the gelatinised mass, and the resulting mixture cartridged.
