Abstract
564,607. Explosives. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO.., E. I., and DAVIS, C. O. Jan. 22, 1943, No. 1125. [Class 9 (ii)] A free-flowing explosive which is resistant to water comprises granules composed of a blended mixture of a fibrous combustible carbonaceous ingredient and an inorganic oxidizing agent, the granules having absorbed therein a liquid explosive nitric ester. The density' of the individual granules is between 1.25 and 1.6. Preferably, aggregates of carbonaceous ingredient and oxidizing agent are made, having a density of between 1.05 and 1.35, and then the aggregates are mixed with the ester. In making the aggregates a plant product capable of forming a cohesive paste on contact with cold water may be used, e.g. a pregelatinized cereal product such as flaked corn, or rye flour, barley flour, oat flour, spelt meal, or linseed meal. The fibrous combustible carbonaceous ingredient may be wood pulp. The inorganic oxidizing agent may be ammonium, sodium or potassium nitrate, or various (unspecified) perchlorates. The liquid nitric ester may be nitroglycerine, in which may be dissolved ethylene glycol dinitrate or tetranitrodiglycerine. With the nitroglycerine may be mixed nitrocellulose, a smokeless powder, nitrostarch, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, T.N.T. paraffin, dinitrotoluene and coal. Other ingredients mentioned in the Specification are sulphur and chalk.
