Abstract

839,078. Ammonium nitrate explosive compositions. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 16, 1959 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 1635/59. Class 9(2) Cast ammonium nitrate explosives are made by mixing an ammonium nitrate melt, a fuel and a foaming agent as de-- fined below to a substantially homogenous consistency and allowing the mixture so obtained to solidify into the desired shape. The foaming agent is defined as a substance which will provide a gaseous pro-- duct in the composition after casting such as hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, barium peroxide, sodium or barium nitrate, ammonium or sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, organic blowing agents such as phenylisocyanate, and also compressed gases. Specified fuels include diesel oils, paraffin waxes and tars, animal or vegetable oils and fats, urea, ethylene glycol, terpenes, rosins, cellulosic materials, long chain organic amines, organic emulsifying agents, graphite, aluminium and ferrosilicon. The composition may be sensitized by addition of a high explosive such as trinitrotoluene, pentaerythritol tetranitrate or cyclo-trimethylene-trinitramine.
