Abstract

391,196. Explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London.-(Hercules Powder Co. ; 900, Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.) Oct. 21, 1931, No. 29283. [Class 9 (ii).] Relates to the manufacture of low-density blasting explosives comprising, for example, an explosive salt such as ammonium nitrate, a carbonaceous material such as wood pulp, bagasse, balsa wood, and bongo wood, and a sensitizer such as nitroglycerine. According to the invention, the carbonaceous material is impregnated with a molten eutectic mixture of two or more salts which are normal constituents of the explosive. A small quantity of water or of hydrated salts or of both may be added. The mixture of salts need not be in eutectic proportions provided that sufficient of the mixture is fused at a temperature not appreciably above the eutectic temperature. An example of a mixture contains ammonium nitrate 75À8 parts by weight, ammonium chloride 5À2 parts, and sodium nitrate 19 parts. This mixture has a eutectic temperature of 112À5‹ C. An example of a completed explosive contains nitroglycerine 12 parts, impregnated material 68 parts, ammonium nitrate 12 parts, and sodium nitrate 8 parts. Several other examples are given.
