Abstract

564,602. Explosives. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and DAVIS, C. O. Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16855. [Class 9 (ii)] A low-velocity detonating explosive pellet, suitable for the blasting of coal, comprises coarse granules of a blended mixture containing a self-explosive inorganic oxidizing ammonium salt and an oxidizable material, the granules being themselves insensitive to detonation by a commercial No. 6 lead azide blasting detonator and being embedded in a coherent explosive matrix of fine particles of an intimately blended ammonium nitrate composition which is free from nitroglycerine or other liquid explosive sensitizer, but is sensitive to detonation by the said commercial detonator and is capable of propagating detonation throughout the whole of the pellet. The granules may comprise various combinations of the following : ammonium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate, sodium or potassium nitrate or perchlorate, finely-divided metals, wood pulp, meals and flours, starch and plant products, and nitro-cotton. The matrix may comprise various combinations of ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, calcium cyanamide, wood pulp, aluminium powder and T.N.T. (the last two being sensitizers for the ammonium nitrate). The matrix may be made by mixing the ingredients in the presence of water, the wet mass being then intermingled with the dry (insensitive) granules and the mixture being pressed into pellet form while still wet. The water of the matrix may be added water or water formed by chemical reaction between ammonium nitrate on the one hand and calcium cyanamide and the free lime therein on the other hand (Diver's solution being formed).
