275,021. Vickers, Ltd., and Berger, E. E. F. Aug. 9, 1926. Explosives; pyrotechnic compositions.-A combustible non-detonating composition for pyrotechnic purposes, such as flame or smoke production for signalling, comprises a large proportion of calcium silicide mixed with a sufficient quantity of suitable oxidizing compound to effect complete or substantially complete oxidation of the silicide without explosive effect; for example, 40 parts by weight of calcium silicide and 60 parts of potassium nitrate. The mixture is compressed into thin cakes and then granulated. The composition may be used like black powder for priming purposes or may be added to or coated on smoke-producing mixtures of the kind described in Specification 127,031, comprising a powdered metal such as zinc and a chlorinated hydrocarbon such as hexachlorethane, with or without calcium silicide and a small quantity of paraffin. This smoke-producing composition may be compressed to a pressure above that produced during combustion under practical conditions. Specifications 28929/09 and 147,104 are referred to.
