Abstract

126,740. Vickers, Ltd., and Johnson, F. G. L. March 14, 1917. Explosives.-A smoke-producing composition, for use in smoke shells, &c., for forming smoke screens, or for other military purposes, comprises powdered or granulated zinc, or a mixture of aluminium and zinc, amounting to not less than onefifth part by weight of the composition, a perchlorate or perchlorates, preferably a mixture of the ammonium and potassium salts, forming the bulk of the remaining ingredients, and an organic binding-agent such as asphalt varnish. Mineral jelly may be added and also a small proportion o sulphur to facilitate ignition. An example contains zinc 22 parts, ammonium perchlorate 16 parts, potassium perchlorate 46 parts, asphalt varnish 8 parts, mineral jelly 4 parts, and sulphur 4 parts.
