Description
Patented Apr. 9, 1929.
LOUIS HENDLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA WAR, AIID HIS SUCOESSOIR-S IN OFFICE, IN TRUST UNITED STATES.
FOR THE FICE.
, ASSIGNOR TO SECRETARY OF GOVERNMENT OF THE IGNITING MIXTURE FOR TRACER COMPOSITIONS.
No Drawing.
Application filed October 22, 1923. Serial No. 670,096.
( GRANTED UNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1883, AS AMENDED APRIL 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757.)
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
The subject of the present invention is an igniting mixture for tracer compositions.
The primary object'of my invention is the provision of a composition which will serve to ignite the basic mixtures of a tracer shell.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of ingredients hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodimcnt of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. 4 g
With certain types of tracer compositions it is advisable to employ an igniting mixture which will be considerably more insensitive than the tracer composition itself and which will serve to ignite that composition. These igniting mixtures are comparable in function to the detonating agents employed in explosive shells.
An igniting mixture such as forms the subj ect of my invention will be composed essentially of comparatively small proportions of a suitable fuel and a considerably greater proportion of a powerful oxidizing agent or agents.
One igniting mixture which has been tested and proved successful in practice is made according to the following formula:
Per cent. Barium nitrate (90% pure) 89.5 Magnesium 10.5
It is by no means intended, however, to
40 limit my invention to the composition given either in the ingredients used or the proportions cited, for it has been found that for the magnesium, aluminum powder or any other suitable fuel may be substituted, according to the molecular equivalent of magnesium,
while instead of a portion of the barium peroxide, red lead or any other suitable oxidizmg agent may be employed as in the following composition Percent Barium peroxide -66.6 Red lead (Pb O -l 11.1 Magnesium 22.3
, ducing the temperature of combustion but is also an efficient binder, so that the mixture containing the red lead may be more readily pelleted when desired.
I claim 1. An igniting mixture for tracers including a peroxide of an alkali earth metal, red lead and a metallic fuel.
2. An igniting mixture for tracers including barium peroxide, red lead and a metallic fuel.
3. An igniting mixture for tracers including barium slum.

part of a metallic 5. An igniting mixture for tracers including barium peroxide approximately 66%, red lead approximately 11% and magnesium approximately 22%.
6. An igniting mixture for tracers including barium peroxide approximately 66%, red lead approximately 11% and a metallic fuel,
approximately 22%.
LOUIS HENDLER.
