Abstract
898,681. Explosive compositions. COOK, M. A., and FARNAM, H. E. Nov. 4, 1958 [Feb. 28, 1958], No. 35413/58. Class 9(2). An explosive composition comprises an oxidising substance which is ammonium nitrate or a mixture of ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate and a metal or high-heat producing non-metal comprising aluminium, magnesium, boron, mixtures of boron, aluminium and magnesium or mixtures of aluminium and ferrosilicon, and water, the ratio of the oxidising substance to the metal or non-metal being from 0/1 to 1/1 and the water being 6 to 14% of the composition. Preferably the water content is between 6 and 10%. The ammonium nitrate and the aluminium may each be mixtures of coarse and fine particles. The composition may be formed by making a substantially saturated aqueous solution of the oxidising substance and adding to it a mixture of particles of said substance with particles of aluminium or other said metal or non-metal to form a slurry. Should a booster be required it is preferred to use pressed or cast pentolite, pressed tetryl, pressed cyclonite or cyclonite/wax mixtures.
