Abstract

869,155. Explosive compositions. COOK, M. A., and FARNAM, H. E. Nov. 4, 1958 [Nov. 21, 1957], No. 35412/58. Class 9(2). An explosive composition in the form of a slurry comprises a mixture of TNT and ammonium nitrate of which between 15 and 95% is TNT, with water in excess of 5 parts for each 100 parts of the TNT/ammonium nitrate mixture, said TNT being of a coarse grade of particle size greater than 30 standard Tyler mesh. The composition may also include aluminium in an amount from 5 to 100 parts for each 80 parts of TNT/ammonium nitrate mixture, and if desired, a waterflow retardant such as wheat flour, cereal products and pre-gelatinized starch products. The term 'TNT' is used to cover not only trinitrotoluene but TNT-solid slurries such as amatol, sodatol, cyclotol, ednotol, tetrytol and pentolite. The ammonium nitrate may be fine or coarse or a blend, and it is preferred that the aluminium if used should be a 50/50 blend of coarse and fine aluminium. The preferred water content is between 13 and 18 parts. Urea or sodium nitrate may be used in amounts from 1 to 25% of the total composition including water to replace part of the ammonium nitrate. The composition may be detonated by a booster such as cast or pressed pentolite, pressed tetryl or pressed cyclonite.
