Abstract
643,872. Blasting cartridges; explosives. ATLAS POWDER CO. July 21, 1947, No. 19451. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1944. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A blasting cartridge has a paper case 11 crimped over a sensitized explosive charge 13 of coarse-grained ammonium nitrate composition with a central core 15 of paper-wrapped gelatinized nitroglycerine dynamite, the composition of the charge and the proportions of core to charge being chosen to give maximum blasting strength without the evolution of red fumes. In an example the main explosive composition was nitroglycerine 5 per cent, coarse ammonium nitrate (95 per cent passing a No. 10 U.S. standard screen, not more than 40 per cent passing a No. 35 screen and not more than 5 per cent passing a No. 70 screen) 84 per cent, ground soft coal 2 per cent, ground sawdust 1.5 per cent, ground apricot stones 7 per cent and calcium carbonate 0.5 per cent, percentages being by weight. The rate of detonation for this composition was 4,200 f.s. when initiated by a No. 6 blasting cap. The composition was packed in cartridges of 5¢ in. diameter and 21¢ in. long with a 1“ in diameter core of 30 per cent ammonia gelatine dynamite having a detonation velocity of 7,900 f.s. An alternative composition is given.
