861,622. Gas generating cartridges and compositions therefor. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 19, 1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 21145/59. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). A fuel charge for a gas generating device comprises as the main fuel a grain 8 of a gas generating composition having at least one longitudinal passage 19 of which one end is substantially filled by a primary ignition charge 20 and the other end contains an ignition assembly 16 from which the charge 20 is ignited and an electric squib 14 located in a polythene cup 17. Additional ignition charges 22 are positioned about the assembly 16 and are ignited after the grain 8 to assist in carrying the flame and hot gases to the peripheral surfaces of said grain. The body of the cartridge consists of a synthetic rubber casing 1, the sidewalls of which have a liner 2 of asbestos and a metallic reinforcing liner 3. The end of the cartridge containing the ignition assembly is closed and the opposing discharge end is closed by a perforated plate 5 crimped about the cartridge at 6 . The grain 8 is of granular ammonium nitrate in a binder and is held by plastic spacers 9 and metal supports 12. Suitable binders for the grain 8 include polybutadiene acrylic acid type synthetic rubber, nitrocellulose, plastic resins and its end surfaces are coated with a layer of inhibitor 23 e.g. rubber-asbestos, ammonium oxalate-synthetic rubber, epoxy resins, polyurethane. The ignition composition 16 comprises 8À5% powdered boron, 78À5% potassium perchlorate, 8À0% graphite, 5À0% polyvinyl acetate and charge 20 is 8À5% boron, 13% aluminium, 64À5% potassium perchlorate, 10À0% graphite, 4À0% polyvinyl acetate housed in a plastic inhibitor 21. Two of the charges 21 comprise e.g. 75À0% ammonium perchlorate, 12À5% polyvinyl chloride and 12À5% dioctyl phthalate while the two remaining charges comprise 57À5% potassium perchlorate 12À5% aluminium powder, 5% boron, 12À5% dioctyl phthalate and 12À5% polyvinyl chloride. In instances where the charges 21 are to be aluminium free the remaining charges comprise e.g. 12À5% dioctyl phthalate, 12À5% polyvinyl chloride, 1% boron and 74% potassium perchlorate.
