Abstract

709,611. Engine starter cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIIES, Ltd. Nov. 21, 1952 [July 24, 1952], No. 18765/52. Class 9(1) An engine-starter cartridge has a brass case with a thickened base 1 flanged to fit the breech of the enginestarter. In the base is an igniter housing 3 containing an electrical igniter 4 charged with fine grain black powderheld in place by a celluloid disc 17. Above the igniter is a muslin bag containing a kindling charge 5 of coarser grain black powder, the bag being cemented to the base of the annular main charge 7. The charge 7 comprises nitrocellulose with nitroglycerine, dibutyl phthalate, diethyl diphenyl urea, mineral jelly and potassium nitrate. Cemented to the base of the charge 7 are three stilts 9 of a colloided nitrocellulose-nitroglycerine composition faster burning than the charge 7. The cement may be made by dissolving the composition forming the stilts in acetone. Studs 8 of the same composition as the stilts 9 space the cylindrical surface of the charge 7 from the case thus leaving an annular passage for the flame gases which communicates through a radial channel 14 with the axial passage 15. A wrapping 16 of regenerated cellulose tape may cover the upper part of the cylindrical surface of the charge 7, the forward end of which is held in a steel spider 10. The arms 10<SP>1</SP> of the spider are bent at right angles to the plane of its annular web and are slightly dished at the bends. The central hole in the spider is of greater diameter than the axial gas passage 15 through the charge. Over the spider is placed a cellulose acetate sealing cup 11 which is covered with a cement before the cartridge case is bent over the spider to form a waterproof seal. A removable metal cap 13 may protect the end of the case during storage.
