Abstract

521,890. Gas pressure generating cartridges. WHITWORTH, E., WARK, R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL-INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 1, 1938, No. 28545. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A gas power cartridge, for operating mechanical devices and containing a wholly combustible ejectable charge, has, in addition to an igniting charge, a main charge comprising a longitudinally perforated smokeless powder rod with a covering of non- explosive slow - burning material to delay ignition along the outer cylindrical surface of the rod until sufficient pressure is generated to eject the rod. In the form shown, the cartridge case 1 contains the main charge 10 with three longitudinal perforations 12, the igniter charge 9, a quick match 8, and the electric fuze head 7, the leads to which .pass through asbestos discs 3, 4 so that contact can be made through a central hole 6. The charge 10 is helically wound with adhesive tape of regenerated cellulose, and the case is closed by a celluloid disc 18 at the turned-over end 19. The igniter pellets 9 are formed of double-base smokeless powder composed of the following parts by weight : nitroglycerine 30, nitrocellulose 67, potassium nitrate 2, diethyl diphenyl urea 1, and graphite 1. The main charge of doublebase propellent powder is composed of the following parts by weight : nitroglycerine 36, nitrocellulose 52, ethyl centralite 5, diamyl phthalate 7 and potassium nitrate 1.
