Abstract

330,493. Spanner, E. F. Junly 19, 1929. Divided on 329,229. Gun cartridges; projectiles.-A rocket for discharge from a firing tube is provided at its rear end with a cartridge which, on being fired, ejects the rocket and simultaneously ignites the rocket propellent material. In one construction, a rocket 1, Fig. 1, containing propellant material 3, is provided with a cartridge at the rear end of the choke 2. The cartridge, Fig. 1A, comprises a cardboard container 14 within a metal case 6, a percussion cap 10, and explosive 5, and is protected against accidental discharge by a safety disc 8. Access of moisture to the explosive or propellant materials is prevented by a. waterproof seal 7. On firing, the explosive 5 starts the rocket forward and ignites the propellant material 3; the cartridge then becomes detached from the rocket and allows free escape of the rearwardly issuing gases. In one modification, the cartridge compartment is formed in a rearward tubular extension of the choke. In a second modification, the cartridge compartment is formed as a separate entity which is joined in the rocket.
