Abstract

124,801. Maxim, Sir H. S., and Colley, C. C. April 6, 1916. Projectiles ; gun cartridges; projectile fuses. - Relates to charges for multicharge guns, of the kind comprising a number of projectiles arranged one behind the other with propellent charges located between them so as to be fired in succession from the gun. The invention consists in forming each projectile with a rearwardly-extending sleeve adapted to fit over the projectile next behind in succession. In the form shown, the projectiles a, provided with hollow tail-pieces d to contain the propelling-charges g, are arranged to fit over one another and form a continuous column which is inserted in a gun having means for igniting the front charge through holes i. The burning of this charge expels the front projectile, bands f being pressed into the rifling by the pressure; of the gases within the hollow tail. The next charge is also ignited by a fuse k, and so on. The bursting-charges b of the projectiles are ignited by magnesium fuses o and fulminate pellets m.
