Abstract

998,450. Propellant cartridges. CANADA, MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE. Nov. 4, 1957 [Nov. 14, 1956], No. 34397/57. Drawings to Specification. Heading F3A. The corrosive effects of propellant gases on a gun barrel are reduced by the formation of a layer of cool, inert gas between the barrel and the propellant gases. The inert gas layer is generated from a composition which is decomposed by the heat of the burning charge and propellant gases and which is formed as a sleeve surrounding the forward end of the charge. To facilitate rapid decomposition of the sleeve, it is in the form of a polyurethane isocyanate foam. Other materials such as nylon, silk, wool, polymethyl methacrylate, synthetic and natural rubbers, polystyrene, polyethylene and silicones may be used and the polyurethane foam may be combined with ammonium oxalate as a filler. Where the projectile and cartridge case are combined, the inert gasforming composition surrounds the propellant charge within the cartridge case. Where the propellant charge and projectile are separate the inert gas-forming composition sleeve surrounds the propellant charge and fits tightly against the inner surface of the gun barrel.
