Abstract

1,101,613. Shot-gun cartridges. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 May, 1965 [16 June, 1964], No. 19171/65. Heading F3A. A cartridge comprising a case 1 of laminated paper or synthetic plastics and a metal head 2 contains a base wad 3 apertured to receive a primer 5 for a propellant charge 6. The overpowder wad 7 and a sleeve 11 surrounding the shot charge 15 have coacting surfaces such that an end of one becomes wedged within the other when the charge 6 is ignited, to provide a gas seal. The wad 7 and sleeve 11 may be made of polyethylene. As shown in Fig. 1, sleeve 11 is closed by a bevelled base 12 over which the tapered wall 9 of wad 7 rides. The sleeve 11 has longitudinal slots extending from its mouth so that, after ejection from the gun, air pressure forces the sleeve 11 combined with wad 7 away from the shot. In an alternative form, the sleeve is not closed but has an inner surface which is frusto-conical, at the base, so that an annular shoulder is formed within the sleeve. The wad is convex at both ends and two circumferential slots render it resilient. After firing one convex end is forced into the sleeve and against the annular shoulder to provide a seal as before.
