Abstract

1,006,110. Cartridge wads. R. W. COMERFORD. July 3, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 26386/63. Heading F3A. Plastics wads for use in a shotgun cartridge consist of a base wad 10 with a powder charge cavity, a primer receiving opening connected to the cavity by an axial flash hole and a flexible lip and rings to seal around the primer opening and cartridge wall, and also an undershot wad 42 with a flexible outer wall fitting inside a cartridge case and having one end adjacent the powder charge, the other end pouch shaped to hold a shot charge and a centre support extending between the two ends and within the wall. The basewad 10 has a cylindrical outer surface 21 with integral sealing rings 31 in contact with the internal surface 21 of a cartridge case 12 and a flange 22 clamped between the opposing surfaces of the case 12 and a metal base 13. A primer opening is sealed against the primer receiving portion of the metal base 13 by rings 37, 38, 39 and an annular lip 34, the fitted primer 36 protruding into a flash hole 32 while the powder charge 14 is contained in a cavity 25. The undershot wad 42 has a cylindrical outer wall 44 and beyond its base 45 a flexible skirt 46 which expands radially when the charge 14 is ignited to provide a seal between the wad 42 and the cartridge ease 12 and reduce the escape of the propellent eases. Portion 47 is pouch shaped to contain the shot 50 and is formed with a shoulder 48 to seat a paper disc 49 which serves as a wall to support the shot. A centre structure 51 which supports the disc 49 and consists of cylindrical portions with radially extending walls influences the distribution of inertia of the shot when the cartridge is fired. The pouch wall 47, which has longitudinal splits 64, protects the shot while in the gun barrel and opens out to free the shot once out of the muzzle. The metal base 13 extends beyond the end of the surface 21 of the base wad 10 to prevent shearing the cartridge case where the base and undershot wads meet.
