Abstract
723,449. Engine-starter cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 6, 1953 [May 7, 1952], No. 11514/52. Class 9(1). A composite gasproducing charge comprises an annular main charge having an outer nitrocellulose coating and being adapted to burn along its inner surface and two end surfaces with at least one cylindrical compensating charge of colloided nitrocellulose composition such that on burning the rate of gas production is maintained constant for a substantial part of the burning time. An engine-starter cartridge, Fig. 1, has a flanged metal base 1 and thinner tapering cylindrical wall 2 having a composite charge of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine including lesser proportions of dibutyl phthalate, diethyl diphenyl urea, mineral jelly and potassium nitrate. In the base 1 is an igniter housing 3 containing an electric igniter 4 charged with fine grain blackpowder covered by a celluloid disc 10. The annular portion 7 of the composite charge has a wrapping 8 of insulating tape to inhibit burning on the outer surface and four solid cylinders 9 of the same composition are cemented to the annulus. The ratio of the thickness of the annulus to the diameter of the cylinders 9 is such that the cylinders 9 burn until. the rate of gas production reaches a maximum. The cement used to fasten the cylinders in place may be acetone. A priming charge of black powder 5 in a muslin bag 6, is cemented to the annulus 7 between the cylinder 9. A cup 11 of cellulose acetate, celluloid or like destructible material closing the cartridge case may be scored or otherwise weakened to facilitate its destruction. A-protective cap (not shown) may be placed over the closure 11 for transport purposes and removed before loading into the chamber of an engine starter, the gases from the cartridge being led off through a pressure control nozzle or nozzles to the blades of a turbine.
