Abstract

552,646. Granular explosive. WHETSTONE, J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 15, 1941, No...,! 1776. [Class 9 (ii)] A granular detonating esplosive for blasting purposes is manufactured by emulsifying a molten organic high explosive such as T.N.T. with the assistance of an emulsifying agent soluble or swellable by water, such, as agar-agar, sodium aliginate, carageen moss, flour, dextrine, starch and the like, in an aqueous medium comprising a saturated solution of ammonium' nitrate carrying solid salt in suspension and free from readily hydratable salts, this medium being adapted to yield a pourable emulsion at the emulsification temperatures, congealing and granulating the resulting emulsion and drying the granules without softening them. Cooling or quenching ingredients such as fluorspor, dolomite anhydrite or oxidisable ingredients such as metal powders or salts which do not readily form hydrates or are not hygroscopic may be introduced into the emulsion. 3 to 8 per cent of water should be present, but if enough water is added-to dissolve the whole of the ammonium chloride, the emulsion would not congeal. The particles are screened and the waste from the screening may be used to form another batch of emulsion. Specification 537,579 is referred to. Several examples are given in the Specification.
