Abstract

A nitrate fertilizer having a pH of at least 4 and in the form of powder, granules or prills is coated with up to 5% of a mineral oil product. Other fertilizer components may be sodium nitrate; potassium nitrate, chloride or sulphate; calcium nitrate; ammonium phosphate; or superphosphate. A granular fertilizer may be prepared by mixing superphosphate and potassium chloride or sulphate in the dry state with a hot concentrated solution of ammonium nitrate in the presence of ammonia or the hydroxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, drying the mixture in a rotating drum, cooling and sieving. The mineral oil product may be medium or heavy distillate fraction, lubricating oil, fuel oil, distillate residue, paraffin wax, petroleum jelly or bituminous product. The fertilizer may in addition be coated with kieselguhr, clay, gypsum or bone meal powder.
