Abstract
537,579. Explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 26, 1939, No. 26679. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1938. [Class 9 (ii)] A cast explosive charge for shells, grenades, mines &c. comprising a mixture of a highly explosive organic compound or compounds, such as trinitrotoluene, and an oxydizing salt or salts, such as ammonium nitrate, is prepared by mixing the salt or salts with an emulsifying agent and heating the mixture to form a melt, the explosive organic compound being then incorporated in the melt. Suitable emulsifying agents are colloids which do not react with the salts or with the high explosive compound and do not coagulate in the concentrated saline medium at the working temperature of from 80‹ to 110‹C., for example, clays of the type known as bentonite, colloidal pentoses or hexoses, vegetable gums and amylaceous substances like dextrin, starch or flour. Organic crystalline substances soluble in water to form syrups of high viscosity, such as sugar or honey, may also be used. A third group of suitable emulsifying agents comprises organic mineral substances which while insoluble in water have a high absorbent power due to their porosity, for example silica gel, kieselguhr, finely ground cellulose, porous carbon and the like. Emulsification is preferably effected in the presence of water either in the free state or in the form of the hydrated crystalline salts such as magnesium nitrate, sodium acetate in admixture with sodium nitrate, and disodium phosphate. Examples of charges prepared according to the invention are given.
