Abstract
792,820. Globular propellants. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1955, No. 29982/55. Class 9(2) In manufacturing propellant powder grains wherein globules of a lacquer of smokeless powder base and waterimmiscible solvent are hardened while suspended in an aqueous liquor, water-soluble salts are incorporated by uniformly distributing the salt particles in lacquer and introducing the lacquer into the liquor. A lacquer is prepared from 20 per cent or more of the required nitrocellulose, potassium nitrate, and ethyl acetate. The lacquer is introduced into a still containing water at 55 ‹C. with sodium sulphate dissolved therein. Where not all the nitrocellulose is in the lacquer, further fibrous nitrocellulose is added to and dissolved in the presence of the suspending liquor. The temperature of the contents of the still is increased to 70‹C. with agitation until the nitrocellulose has dissolved. The lacquer is disintegrated into particles as in Specification 473,057 and, when the desired degree of disintegration has been achieved, the speed of agitation is reduced to such as will maintain the suspension, until the particles are rounded, when the temperature is increased to not more than 99‹C., with or without vacuum application. to distil off the solvent leaving hardened grams.
