793,398. Smokeless powder compositions. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 22, 1956 [May 17, 1955], No. 8956/56. Class 9(2) The invention comprises smokeless powder grains having a coating of a di-isoalklphthalate having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. Suitable smokeless powders are those with a nitrocellulose base or those containing a liquid explosive ester (e.g. nitroglycerin) in combination with nitrocellulose or nitrostarch. The diisoalkylphthalate should be used in amounts of between 2 and 15 per cent. The deterrent may be applied to the grains for example by suspending the grams in an emulsion of the di-isoalkylphthalate in water using gum arabic as emulsifying agent. In an example spherical grains of gelatinized nitrocellulose coated with about 15 per cent of nitroglycerin were coated with about 4 per cent diisobutylphthalate by emulsion coating.
