Abstract

1282861 Propellants E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 1 March 1966 [1 March 1965] 9033/66 Heading C1D A progressive burning smokeless powder has a coating of a water-insoluble organic ester of melting point below 35‹ C. and boiling point above 200‹ C., the solubility of the nitrocellulose in the ester being in the range from that in ethylene dimethacrylate to that in ethylene dipropionate. Other suitable esters are triethylene diacrylate, triethylene dimethacrylate, diallyl phthalate, and diallyl isophthalate. The powder is prepared by agitating the base grain with an aqueous emulsion of the ester at 20- 120‹ C.; many suitable emulsifying agents are specified. The coated powder may be glazed with graphite. The base grain may be of the single or double base type and contain nitroglycerine, nitroguanidine, diethylene glycol dinitrate, or triethylene glycol dinitrate. Other additives referred to are potassium sulphate, diphenylamine, urea, and carbon black.
