Abstract
Aluminium alkyl (particularly C1-C4) sesquichlorides are prepared by reacting aluminium with an alkyl chloride in the presence of a reaction initiator comprising aluminium chloride and an aluminium alkyl halide. The aluminium used may be in any form, preferably as turnings or powder: if desired it may be alloyed, for example with magnesium. The aluminium alkyl halide may be the sesquichloride it is desired to produce. It is preferred that approximately equal proportions by weight of aluminium chloride and aluminium alkyl halide are used in the reaction initiator, and the total amount of initiator is preferably in excess of 2 per cent by weight of the reaction mixture. The process may be carried out at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of about 50 DEG C. It is preferred to mix the aluminium with the reaction initiator in an atmosphere of a gas such as nitrogen at a temperature between 50-100 DEG C., and then to add the alkyl chloride. The desired product may be distilled or extracted by solvents from the reaction mixture. The examples describe the preparation of aluminium ethyl sesquichloride from aluminium and ethyl chloride using aluminium chloride and (1) aluminium ethyl di-iodide, (2) aluminium ethyl sesquichloride, and (3) aluminium ethyl dichloride, and (4) aluminium methyl sesquichloride from aluminium and methyl chloride in the presence of aluminium methyl dichloride and aluminium chloride.
