Abstract
Aluminium trialkyls are prepared by reacting an alkyl halide in the absence of ether at a temperature between 30 DEG and 170 DEG C. with an aluminium-magnesium alloy containing from 57 to 65 per cent of magnesium. The alloy may be used in a finely divided form, and a little iodine or alkylaluminium sesquibromide may be added with the alloy to catalyse the reaction. It is preferred to use the alkyl halide in the undiluted state but the reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent, e.g. hydro-aromatic hydrocarbons. The reaction products usually contain some halogen and it can be removed by further treatment with the finely powdered aluminium-magnesium alloy at a temperature of 150 DEG to 170 DEG C. In the examples the alloy contains 60 per cent magnesium, and trimethyl-, triethyl- and tri-n-butyl-aluminium are prepared.
