Abstract

In the process for the production of aluminium alkyls by reacting aluminium with a primary alkyl halide in an inert solvent and then reacting the solution of aluminium sesquihalide thus formed with an alkali metal to give a first reaction product comprising aluminium and aluminium alkyl, the said first reaction product without the addition of further aluminium is reacted with a primary alkyl halide (as defined below) to form an alkyl aluminium sesquihalide and then this is reacted in situ with an alkali metal to give a second reaction product containing additional aluminium alkyl. Specified primary alkyl halides are methyl chloride, bromide and iodide, ethyl chloride, bromide and iodide, propyl bromide and iodide, n-butyl bromide and iodide and isobutyl iodide. The solvent should be free from aromatic compounds and is preferably a paraffinic or alicyclic hydrocarbon. Specifications 762,200 and 820,185 are referred to.
