Abstract
535,145. Alkyl halides. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Jan. 19, 1940, No. 1186. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Iu a process for the production of alkyl halides from alkenes and hydrogen halide in the presence of a catalyst, a solution of an acidacting metal or boron halide, such as an aluminium halide, or zinc chloride, tin chloride, or boron fluoride, in an ether, is employed as a catalyst. As ethers, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, ethyl propyl and methyl butyl ethers are specified. The catalyst is prepared by dissolving the aluminium or other halide in the dried ether. In examples, pentyl chloride is obtained from pentene-2 and hydrochloric acid, using a solution of aluminium chloride in diethyl ether as catalyst. Hydrobromic acid may also be used as the hydrogen halide.
