Abstract
1,272,420. Lithium aluminium hydride. METALGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 7 Nov., 1979 [9 Nov., 1968], No. 54731/69. Heading C1A. Lithium aluminium hydride is prepared by the reaction of sodium hydride, aluminium chloride and a lithium halide (other than the fluoride) in solution in diethyl ether which contains not more than 20 wt. per cent of hydrocarbons or higher dialkyl ethers as impurities, under an inert atmosphere, the reactants and solvent being substantially anhydrous. It is preferable to add lithium hydride and/or preformed lithium aluminium hydride to initiate the reaction. The reactants are preferably used in the proportions where R is the initiator, x and z are each positive numbers less than one, or zero, arid y is chosen so that the solution obtained is approximately 1-molar in LiAlH 4 . The lithium halide and sodium hydride are preferably finely-ground before or during the reaction.
