Abstract
Trialkyl aluminium complexes or addition compounds are reacted with alkali metal hydrides, if desired in the presence of olefines, to give alkali metal alkyl aluminium compounds or alkali metal alkyl aluminium hydrides. Especially suitable are the halide (particularly fluoride), cyanide and trialkylamine complexes and addition compounds. When carrying out the reaction in the presence of an olefine it is preferred to use that olefine corresponding to the alkyl residue. Sodium hydride is the preferred reactant. The liberated complex formers may be readily separated from the reaction products: alkali metal fluorides and cyanides crystallise out directly and may be separated by decantation, filtration or centrifuging, and tertiary amines can be distilled off, preferably in vacuo. If desired, the reaction may be carried out in stages by adding an ether or tertiary amine to the complex aluminium compound, separating the etherate or trialkyl aminate and reacting this with sodium hydride. The process is particularly applicable to the trialkyl aluminium complexes resulting from the working up of the electrolysis products from the electrolytic production of alkyl metal compounds such as tetraethyl lead. The product of the process of the invention may be returned as electrolyte to the electrolytic cell.
