Abstract

Organotin hydrides are prepared by reacting organotin halides with dialkyl aluminium hydrides in the absence of air and moisture and the resulting organotin hydrides separated from the reaction mixture are freed from organo-aluminium compounds by agitating with water or a solution of alkali metal bicarbonate. If desired the treatment with water or alkali metal bicarbonate may precede the separation of the organotin hydride from the reaction mixture. Inert liquids may be used as diluents, but a solvent or diluent is not essential to the carrying out of the process. The organotin hydride may be distilled from the reaction mixture. Dialkyl aluminium halides are produced as by-products, and these may be reacted with tin tetrahalide (e.g. SnCl4) to produce further dialkyl tin dihalide or tetra-alkyl tin which may be reacted with tin tetrahalide to give dialkyl tin dihalide. In order to improve the separating of the alkyl tin hydride the dialkyl aluminium halide may be bound by addition of a complex-forming agent (e.g. an ether or a tertiary amine) in amount at least equivalent to the dialkyl aluminium halide present in the mixture. If desired the complex forming agent may be present from the beginning of the reaction.
