Abstract
Alkyl-tin compounds are prepared by reacting tin tetrachloride, -bromide or -iodide with alkyl aluminium compounds in the presence of an ether or tertiary amine and in the absence of alkali metal halides. Tertiary amines specified include triethylamine, tributylamine, dimethylcyclohexylamine and dimethylaniline, as well as heterocyclic bases such as pyridine and quinoline. Etherates or amine complexes of the alkyl aluminium compounds or of the tin tetrahalide may be used, or the ether may be used as reaction solvent. It is also possible to carry out the reaction in the absence of an ether or amine and to add the ether or amine in an amount at least equivalent to the aluminium charged. The reaction product is homogeneous and not a mixture of compounds: its chemical composition is dependent upon the proportions of reagents initially used and on the composition of the aluminium compound. The alkyl aluminium compound may be a trialkyl aluminium, a dialkyl aluminium chloride, monoalkyl aluminium dichloride or an alkyl aluminium sesquichloride. Specification 768,765 is referred to.
