Abstract
Alkyl or alkenyl tin halide (not fluoride) mixtures consisting mainly of dialkyl or dialkenyl tin dihalide are prepared by reacting metallic tin at elevated temperatures (90-210 DEG C.) with an alkyl or alkenyl halide, in the presence of one or more As and/or Sb halides as catalyst in total amount 1-8 mole per cent based on the tin. A secondary catalyst comprising dialkyl or dialkenyl tin dihalide, with the same alkyl or alkenyl groups as the desired product may be added in amount 2-6 mole per cent. An excess of alkyl or alkenyl halide is prepared, i.e. a mole ratio Sn : RX of 1 : 3 to 7, and if a less reactive alkyl or alkenyl halide is used (e.g. C6-C12 alkyl chlorides), the addition of the more reactive bromide or iodide in amount 0.2 to 1.3 and 0.1 to 0.4 moles per mole of tin is advantageous. A solvent is not necessary except as a diluent for rapid reactions, and water should be excluded or, if present, continuously removed by azeotropic reflux distillation.
