Abstract

In preparing sodium aluminium hydride by reacting an aluminium chloride and sodium hydride in tetrahydrofuran, the aluminium chloride is used in the form of an etherate of diethyl ether, and the NaH is prepared by hydriding a dispersion of Na metal in an inert liquid hydrocarbon. The Na metal is agitated in the liquid hydrocarbon at 200-350 DEG C. under atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure in the presence of hydrogen, and agitation is continued until hydrogen absorption ceases. The NaH, as a dispersion in the hydrocarbon, or after separation therefrom, is placed in a vessel, tetrahydrofuran is added, followed by the aluminium chloride etherate. The reaction may be effected in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, and some NaAlH4 may be included as seed. The precipitated sodium halide and excess NaH may be centrifuged off, the tetrahydrofuran and diethyl ether are removed by distillation, and the NaAlH4 precipitates from the hydrocarbon.
