Abstract

Diethylaminoaceto - 2 : 6 - xylidide is prepared by reacting 2 : 6-xylidine under anhydrous conditions with a Grignard reagent RMgY (where R is a hydrocarbon residue and Y is a halogen atom other than fluorine), reacting the product so obtained with a compound of the general formula N(C2H5)2CH2COX (where X is an alkoxy group containing 1-6 carbon atoms) under anhydrous conditions, and decomposing the resulting complex with an aqueous medium to form the desired product. In examples: (1) ethylmagnesium bromide is the Grignard reagent used, in ether as a solvent, and decomposition of the complex is effected with aqueous ammonium chloride; (2) the reagent is benzylmagnesium chloride in toluene.
