Abstract
An alkyl aluminium halide of general formula RmAlpXn, where R is an alkyl group, X is a halogen atom, m+n = 3, when p = 1 and m = n = 3 when p = 2 is prepared by reacting a trialkyl aluminium with a hydrogen halide in at least a chemically equivalent amount with respect to the aluminium. The reaction may be carried out at room temperature, preferably under an anhydrous nitrogen atmosphere, and under atmospheric pressure or at an elevated pressure, suitably in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent. The reaction mixture may be heated to 80 DEG to 100 DEG C. to complete the reaction. Gaseous hydrogen halide may be allowed to bubble into the liquid or lap the surface of the liquid whilst it is stirred. The trialkyl aluminium may be employed in the pure state or in admixture with the corresponding monohydride.
